Truth About Lucio Tan

While I was taking a stroll around PCIJ’s Blog, I saw in the website’s shoutbox a link to a controversial website.

I’ll begin first with a disclaimer: I am not in any way confirming that this blog contains factual posts nor am I rejecting the possibility that there is indeed truth behind those posts.

Now back to opinionated stuff.

With my nature, I’m always skeptical about these things. But these blogs do attract attention. It’s so easy to put up a blog and you just need materials or inspiration to fill-up that website.

Dark Side of Blogging

Yes, let’s start with the cons. Because it’s so easy, we can post things that can hurt or offend other people; may that be the intention of the author(s) or not. There is no authority out there on the net that will moderate these things. If there was then internet as a free medium will be over. Even if some group wished it, the internet is just too big and loose to tie down and check.

Recently, a close friend ranted out and asked for my advice. Apparently, an anonymous person created a fake blog. A post on the blog curses my friend and threatens to post my friend’s dark secrets.

The Other Side, Perhaps Truth

On the other hand, the internet can communicate important messages to us whether it’s as small as a friend’s birthday reminder or something as big as world news. Take for example how social networking websites played a big role in telling the world what was happening in Iran after the elections. I didn’t proactively searched for Iran Elections but I found out what was happening even if I visited social networking sites more often than news websites. Horay for Twitter Facebook and Youtube!

Moderation

I wouldn’t say there’s a thin line between truth and hoax in blogging. However, there is indeed a thin line between freedom and self-control. Think of blogging as speaking out loud in a room. Even if you had the freedom to say anything, it’s not pleasant to speak ill of people around you. Perhaps, it is time to review ethics in line with the web.
