On the Topic, Cory
Just like the time when the Iran elections was a buzz, the death of former president of the Philippines, Cory Aquino, was in every corner of the country’s internet.
My TwitterFox gave out an alert every few minutes. At least half of the new tweets were about Cory. People “shed tears for Cory.” I have no problem with grieving or sentiments but how come the tweets look almost the same. In the Facebook world, it was pretty much the same with people having status messages that “shed tears”. Friendster had an official page for Cory as well as they placed a yellow ribbon beside their logo. In all of my social networks, people were adding or even replacing their avatars with the yellow ribbon.
I admit my statement above is generalizing a lot of people and their emotion about the death of an icon of democracy. But I want people to think this. Whether or not Cory died this month or next year or maybe not anytime soon, nothing really changed.
We are people who have no sight. From something as simple as writing our own message for Cory to something bigger as acting out the democracy Cory fought for, we do not deserve to mourn something we never lost. We never had freedom in our minds from the start.
I hope this won’t die down like some propaganda. If I must say, though it is too late, think about this. When we sit in front of our computers and surf the internet, we know we are free and we act that way. Why can’t we take the web in real life?
